Enterprise BI & Data Architecture

Samsung: A Governed Power BI Ecosystem

Modernizing a fragmented legacy reporting landscape — SAP BusinessObjects, Tableau, SAP, ISPASS and Google Cloud — into one governed Power BI architecture.

The business challenge

Samsung's reporting environment mixed legacy reporting technologies, enterprise systems, on-premises data sources, cloud environments and independently developed reports — SAP BusinessObjects, Tableau, SAP data, ISPASS, Google Cloud/Big Data and other operational sources. Information was available but not easy to maintain, integrate, govern or consume consistently. Migration was never just recreating charts: understanding where data came from, how reports calculated their metrics and which reports were still relevant were the real challenges.

The solution

Z&C worked from report migration up to data architecture. Legacy reports were reviewed first — KPIs, source systems, SAP dependencies, existing Tableau and BusinessObjects logic, refresh requirements, consumers, security and consolidation opportunities — then rebuilt across source, integration, and analytics & presentation layers. Every migrated report went through logic validation and reconciliation so it could never silently produce a different business result.

Implementation

  • Source layer

SAP, ISPASS, Google Cloud/Big Data, enterprise databases, legacy reporting sources and operational systems brought into one governed architecture.

  • Integration layer

Alteryx, APIs, iPaaS, ETL/ELT processes, data transformations, gateway connectivity and RPA where appropriate.

  • Analytics & presentation layer

Power BI semantic models, DAX, Power Query, reusable KPIs and row-level security powering reports, apps and executive/operational dashboards.

  • On-premises bridge

The Power BI gateway bridged on-premises sources so enterprise data kept supporting reporting during the transition.

  • Logic validation & reconciliation

SQL logic, joins, filters, aggregations, date logic and DAX validated per migrated report; report-specific calculations moved toward reusable governed business logic.

Business results

  • Governed foundation

Multiple enterprise sources now feed one Power BI ecosystem with centralized, reusable business logic.

  • Consistent KPIs

Executive and operational reporting share the same definitions across finance, procurement, operations and customer care.

  • Security & control

Governed access and distribution through Power BI Apps, with cloud and on-premises data coexisting.

  • Future-ready platform

A foundation positioned for new analytics and AI use cases — not just a visualization tool.

Case positioning

Power BI became part of the broader enterprise data and analytics architecture — connecting planned output to actual performance across the business.
